Beowulf and Grendel

The seminal Anglo-Saxon poem, famously translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf gains new resonance for fans in Sturla Gunnarsson’s updated English language version.

The story retains its mythical epic qualities as the King of Danes (Stellan Skarsġard) struggles to cope with the retribution of the troll, Grendel. Having slain his father and spared the young troll, the King and his people fall victim to the now adult Grendel’s murderous anger. In desperation the Danes seek help from their Norse ally, Beowulf (Gerard Butler). Despite his savage nature, the troll adheres to a strict code of revenge, his quarrel is with the Danes not with Beowulf. Selma (Sarah Polley), a sensuous and mysterious witch serves to undermine Beowulf’s commitment to kill on behalf of King Hrothgar. However, when Grendel’s attacks intensify, the conflict builds to an inevitable, and vicious final battle.

Themes of vengeance, loyalty and mercy are played out amid the fantastic beauty of the bleak landscape in this first cinematic interpretation of this classic literary work.

後世に多大な影響を与えたアングロ・サクソン語の詩で、シーマス・ヒーニーにより翻訳された ものものが有名な『ベーオウルフ』は、ストゥーラ・ガナーソンの最新の英語版でファンに新たな反響を呼び起こす。

物語は、デーン人の王（ステラン・スカルスガード）がトロールのグレンデルの仕返しに対処し ようと奮闘する伝説的な叙事詩の質を保っている。父親を殺し、幼いトロールの命は容赦した王とその民は、今や大人になったグレンデルの残忍な怒りの犠牲と なっている。どうしようもなくなって、デーン人はスカンジナヴィアの同盟者ベーオウルフ（ジェラード・バトラー）に助けを求める。その残虐な性質にもかか わらず、トロールは、自分の諍（いさか）いはデーン人とのものであってベーオウルフとではないという、復讐の厳密な規範を守っている。官能的で謎めいた魔 女のセルマ（サラ・ポーリー）が、フロスガール王のために殺すというベーオウルフの係わり合いを邪魔する。しかし、グレンデルの攻撃が激しさを増すと、争 いは避け難く激しい最終戦へとなっていく。

この古典的な作品の初めての映像化にあたって、復讐、忠誠心、慈悲のテーマが荒涼とした風景 の幻想的な美しさの中で繰り広げられる。
