Narration
Hwaet!  Great are the tales of the Spear-Danes
How they broke and bloodied their foes
How they tamed the Northern seas
Some tales sail, others sink
Below the waves but no less true...

Hrothgar
 [the Danish Village -- evening]
Let this great hall tell the world
No man stands above the Danes.
All we look upon is ours.
Hrothgar, much-loved king of the Danes, under Odin's eye
I blood you lucky on all paths that leave this hall.

May all those who cross these steps find a happy heart!

G'day.
G'day.  I'd owe much to know my whereabouts.

I'm Beowulf.

You've not had another wash up?
Like myself... name of Breca?
We were out hunting walrus a couple of days ago. Storm came up and ate our boat.
So this is just you coming now?
Yeah. Y'ever swum in the open sea?
Leave that to my boats.
Am I right to think you mock me?
Can't see much life in that.
[pointing the sword] You do this a lot?
I take what comes.
Good. Then you'll have no qualms if supper tastes like you.

Eat. Be yourself, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.
So...what's it like being a hero?
Quelling things with axes and that sword of yours... in...what...a kind of bloody madness?
In truth, I don't get all that mad.
 [Beowulf's remembrance of a battle]
So...a hero, eh? A hero for supper. Don't my shit shine.
I'm in your debt.
I'm in the fish's. One of these days, they'll come for theirs.

Narration
 [Geatland]
The winds were kind.
No storm waylaid the sword-wulf on his hard walk home.
None in Geatland held so strong the love of kin, as Bewoulf.
But coming home he heard the tale.
Friends to the west slept with slaughter.

Thorkel

Troll dropped death upon the Danes.
Great Beowulf alone had bested bears,
thought fearless in their mood for men.
But now he brought a half score or more of Geat swords to swing, against this thing!

Hondscioh

Thorkel

Hondscioh
Hygelac
Hoisting swords?  He couldn't host his own sail!
 [all laugh]
While Hondscioh, queller of puffins... and beer,
shook his shield to shake the world!
No, just on that scum Troll's head.
Beowulf.

Beowulf

Well as we've done these last few years, this sail holds grim bliss for me.
A thing that takes two hunderd in arms ... is no small thing.
But I will see Valhalla or that thing's head on a pole.
So the Danes might say, Geats don't wield words where swords speak truer.
 [cheers]
Great as our own shield king is, there is another nearest kin to me.

Hygelac None bleed for a better king than Hrothgar.
I'd die happy!  Loved as he!
But we live happy even now!
So... Beowulf goes at dawn to the Danes.
All you who go along... keep us proud!
 [cheers]
And find Hondscioh a wife. Our sheep have had enough.

Madness has its wonders.
The Celt sat straight in the path of the thing ... and was not touched.
The Celt held no sword. Perhaps the thing hates weapons.
Well, your men were armed.
True. Others here in arms have been spared.
I've been waiting for Ordin to bring me my death. He Hasn't.
In his wisdom.

Unferth feels that he's fallen from the grace of the gods.

They swim only out of fear.
But still ... they swim.

Yes. The much-told hero from Geatland.
So who are your people?
None. I came here in my teens.
A whore to Unferth's uncle, Alvis Three-Legs.
So you're not then Dane?
Oh, I am. My family was killed by Wulfing raiders.
My father too ... not killed, but... a feud with the Wulfings brought us here.
I guess you weren't made a whore.

The death of the troll will cost dearly to both Geats and Danes...as it bloody well should.
Why as it should?
